Injury and ill health reviews
At a glance
If you are receiving an ill health pension and/or injury benefit it may be reviewed to ensure that it continues to be paid correctly.
Periodic checks
Reviewing your ill health pension
The scheme manager may periodically review whether your medical unfitness has ceased or significantly worsened, you may also request a review if you feel your medical unfitness has significantly worsened. This applies if:
- You are in receipt of a lower tier ill health pension from the 2015 or 2006 scheme or an ill health pension from the 1987 scheme and under the normal pension age of the scheme, or
- You are in receipt of a lower tier and higher tier ill health pension and have not yet reached your state pension age.
They will get in touch to arrange a review of your health, which may include an assessment by a selected medical practitioner. The review may result in a change to your entitlement to an ill health pension if your condition has:
- Worsened – you may be eligible to receive a higher-tier pension (if you were previously on a lower tier pension)
- Improved – you may be able to return to work and your pension would cease. Or you could be moved from a higher-tier pension to a lower-tier pension.
Changes to your wellbeing
Reviewing your injury benefits
The scheme manager must check at such intervals as may be suitable whether your degree of disablement has altered.
They will get in touch with you to arrange a review of your injury benefits, which may include an assessment with a selected medical practitioner and if the degree of disablement has substantially altered then the injury benefit will be revised accordingly.
