Ill health reassessments and remedy

At a glance

If you retired on ill health between April 2015 and September 2023, you can choose whether your pension for that period is calculated under your old (legacy) scheme or the 2015 scheme. If you retired before you changed scheme because of remedy, you may need to be re-assessed to see what benefits you are eligible for in the 2015 scheme.

The impact of remedy

Are ill health benefits affected by remedy?

If you retired before 1 October 2023 due to ill health and are eligible for remedy, you will have a choice to change where your ill health benefits are paid from for the remedy period.

The ill health benefits are different across each of the police pension schemes, and when you retired you will have been assessed to check you qualified for the payments.

If, as part of remedy, you want to change your options, you may need to be reassessed against the ill health requirements for the alternative scheme to see if you have a different entitlement.

Ill health re-assessment - 1987 members

Members who were originally assessed under the PPS 1987 will need a reassessment to confirm if they would be eligible to receive benefits at the enhanced upper tier under the PPS 2015.

What will be assessed?
The assessment will determine if you are capable of performing regular employment, which is the criteria for enhanced upper tier benefits under the PPS 2015. You can read about the ill health benefits from the 2015 scheme in the ill health section of this website.

This re-assessment will be carried out based on the position as at your original date of retirement and within five years of your date of retirement.

By consenting to the re-assessment:

  • You are not being asked to make a choice about any benefits
  • You are not bound by the results of the re-assessment
  • The re-assessment cannot be used for the purposes of anything else, such as an ill-health review

Important
The outcome of the re-assessment cannot be a negative one. You are already eligible for the 1987 scheme benefits being paid to you.

The outcome may be that you are eligible for enhanced upper tier 2015 scheme benefits; and in some circumstances, this may provide a higher level of benefit then those already in payment. It will be your decision whether to accept any alternative benefits available under the 2015 scheme.

You do not have to choose the alternative benefits, even if they are higher.

Ill health re-assessment - 2006 members

Because both 2006 and 2015 schemes use the same criteria to assess ill health, no re-assessment is required when making a choice between these schemes.
