2006 scheme

A brief overview

The police pension scheme 2006 was closed to new members in April 2015.

Officers who started their police service after 6 April 2006 will have joined the police pension scheme 2006 unless they opted not to do so.

Members who joined before 31 March 2012 were able to build up benefits until 31 March 2022, unless they left service or opted out of the scheme.

Members who opted out or left the service have deferred benefits in the scheme. Anyone who opted out or left and then subsequently rejoined or opted back in before 2015, would have had the opportunity to re-join the police pension scheme 2006 and build up further benefits in that scheme.

Members who joined after 31 March 2012, were able to build up benefits in the scheme until 31 March 2015. On 1 April 2015, these members were moved to the 2015 scheme.

On 1 April 2022 all remaining members of the police pension scheme 2006 were moved to the 2015 scheme.

Members may still have benefits in the police pension scheme 2006 which they can take when they come to retire. Members are likely also to have benefits in the police pension scheme 2015.

The police pension scheme 2006 is a final salary scheme, which means that your pension is calculated based on the number of years you are a member and your salary. Read more in the how your pension is built up section.

When it was first introduced the police pension scheme 2006 was known as the new police pension scheme, or NPPS. Links to the full regulations for the police pension scheme 2006 can be found in the resources section.
