Making your choice – Active and deferred members
At a glance
Each year you will be given full details of the benefits that you can choose from in each of the schemes. This information will be combined with your annual benefit statement, in a document called an ABS-RSS (annual benefit statement, remediable service statement).
About your statement
Understanding your ABS-RSS
Your annual benefit statement, remediable service statement sets out your pension benefits for the remedy period.
It shows you:
- What your benefits look like in your legacy scheme
- What your benefits look like in the reformed scheme
- Any difference between the two
This helps you understand how remedy may affect your pension and gives you information about any contribution adjustment that may apply.
It allows you to:
- See how your pension builds up under each option
- Understand any differences in value
- Start thinking about what might be right for you
Making your choice
What decisions do I need to make?
You do not need to make any immediate decisions about your choice of benefits for the remedy period. This decision will be made at the point when you retire.
The only decision that you need to make, is whether you wish to settle your contribution adjustment now or later. This decision will be unique to you and depend on your individual circumstances.
Find out more about this in the contribution adjustments section.
The right choice for you
Retirement options
At retirement, you will have benefits in two of the police pension schemes – 2015 and one of the legacy schemes.
Each of the police pension schemes has a different retirement age. This should be considered carefully, as the decisions you make in one scheme can affect when you are able to take your benefits from another scheme.
More information is shared in the 1987 and 2006 sections of this website.
Your decision is individual to your own circumstances. When you retire, your administrator will provide you with all the details you need to make a decision. This will be in the form of a remediable service statement.
