Opting in or rejoining
At a glance
You may have chosen to leave the scheme and changed your mind and want to rejoin. If you want to opt into or rejoin the scheme, there are some things to consider depending on how long you have not been a member.

Joining when you start work
Auto enrolment
When you start work at a police force you will automatically be put into the pension scheme. You can choose to opt out at any time, however, in line with government legislation, your employer will have to re-enrol you in the scheme. The date that your employer will do this will depend on your specific employer, but generally this will be every three years.
If you are re-enrolled and do not want to be a member, you can choose to opt out again.
Your options
Leaving the scheme and rejoining
If you leave the police pension scheme and then later decide to rejoin, you will have options depending on the length of time since you left.
Generally, your membership will start again a month after you opt in. If you have previously opted out, you may need to wait until 12 months has passed before you can rejoin.
