1987 scheme

A brief overview

Officers who started their police service before 6 April 2006 will have joined the police pension scheme 1987, unless they opted not to do so.

The police pension scheme 1987 was closed to new members from 6 April 2006. The police pension scheme 2006 came into effect for new entrants on that date.

Members of the police pension scheme 1987 had an opportunity to join and transfer their existing service to the police pension scheme 2006 under special terms, if they wished. This took place during a pension’s ‘options exercise’ between 1 November 2006 and 31 January 2007.

Existing members were able to continue to build up benefits in the police pension scheme 1987 after 6 April 2006 until 31 March 2022, unless they left service or opted out. If they opted out or left the service, their 1987 pension became deferred. If they subsequently rejoined or opted back in before 2015, they would have had an opportunity to join the police pension scheme 2006 and build up further benefits in that scheme.

If members left the scheme during the remedy period 1 April 2015 – 31 March 2022, they were not able to rejoin the 1987 scheme, but, if they were eligible for remedy, they were provided with a choice of benefits for this period.

On 1 April 2022, all members were moved to the 2015 scheme.

This section of the website applies only to members of the police pension scheme 1987. There are separate sections for the police pension scheme 2006 and the 2015 scheme.

The police pension scheme 1987 is a final salary scheme, which means that your pension is calculated based on the number of years you were a member and your salary at date of leaving. Read more in the how your pension is built up section.
